Dick Ault

Coached and taught physical education at Westminster for 29 years before retiring in 1997. Coached All-Americans in cross country and track. Also coached swimming and golf, guiding the Blue Jays golfers to the NAIA national tournament in 1990 and 1991, and the 1996 golf team to a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title. Ault was a Big Six and Big Seven hurdle champion at the University of Missouri and finished fourth in the 1948 Olympics in the 400 intermediate hurdles. Ironically he was coached at the University of Missouri by the late Tom Botts ’27. Ault is a member of the University of Missouri Hall of Fame, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame and the National High School Sports Hall of Fame.

The Barrow Brothers

A Westminster College record that will stand the test of time involves the Barrow Brothers from New Bloomfield, Missouri. Five of the six sons attended Westminster. Each was named to the Dean’s List and they earned a combined 32 varsity letters during a 17-year stretch when at least one son was enrolled at the College. In addition to their professional accomplishments, they formed one of the best basketball teams in Missouri during the 1930s. In 1992 the Barrow Brothers, Cave, ’30, Harold, ’36, Loyd, ’36, Ray, ’40, Finis, ’43, and younger brother John, were inducted into the Missouri Basketball Hall of Fame. It was the first time a group of brothers were inducted together.

Jim Bennett, '92

One of the most decorated athletes in the modern era. A four-year letterman in both basketball and golf. Earned various all-conference and all-district awards in basketball while finishing his career second on the career scoring list (now third with 1,731 points). An all-conference and all-district performer in golf who played on Westminster’s 1990 and 1991 NAIA national tournament qualifying teams. An academic all-conference selection and an NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete.

Tom Botts, '27

A basketball player and all-conference hurdler at Westminster. A Hall of Fame coach at the University of Missouri. Westminster’s former track named for coach Botts. Inducted  into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame and Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

W.A. 'Junior' Boyd, '30

An all-state performer called by many as Westminster College’s ’best all-around athlete’ ever. Only athlete to earn 16 varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball and track during a four-year career. Played professional football for the Chicago Cardinals. A member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

Dr. Bill Cross, '55

A four-year starter, three-year captain, and four-time all-conference performer in the Missouri College Athletic Union. He was the first Blue Jay to score over 1,000 career-points in basketball. Is currently 15th on the men’s basketball career scoring list with 1,007 points.

Forrest S. DeBernardi, '21

AAU All-American at Westminster. Made a school-record 24 field goals against Missouri Wesleyan College on January 19, 1920. Went on to play semi-pro basketball in the Kansas City area. A member of the Helms Basketball Hall of Fame and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

Harold Flynn

Coached the Westminster College Blue Jay baseball team for 31 years, the longest tenure of all baseball coaches in the 100-plus year history of the program. Guided the baseball team to 294 victories and a pair of MCAU titles. Noted for developing former major leaguer and Fultonian "Bake" McBride. During his Westminster career, Coach Flynn taught physical education, served as director of athletics, coached men’s basketball and started the women’s volleyball program.

Henry 'Hank' Iba, '27

All-state performer in football, basketball and baseball. Went on to coach Oklahoma State to two national basketball titles. Coached the United States to a pair of gold medals in basketball and coached the 1972 United States team that lost to the Russians in the disputed championship game. A member of the Helms Basketball Hall of Fame and Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

Keith Journey, '79

Westminster’s only individual national champion. Captured the 1977 NCAA Division III national long jump championship with a school-record leap of 23-9 1/2.

Eugene Kimbrell, '20


Played intercollegiate tennis at Westminster. Returned to coach basketball at Westminster for 34 years, guiding the Blue Jays to four Missouri College Athletic Union titles and 316 basketball victories. Co-founder of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame and the Helms Basketball Hall of Fame.

Brad Marcks, '90

An all-conference and all-district performer in both basketball and baseball during his career. An academic all-conference and NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete honor winner. Holds school record for career three-pointers made with 234. Currently eighth on the men’s career basketball scoring list with 1,189 points.

Robyn McArthur, '97

A two-sport student-athlete. Earned first team all-conference honors four years in a row as a record-setting infielder/outfielder on the softball team. Also lettered in basketball four years, finishing her career in the top ten in career points, rebounds and assists.

Arnold 'Bake' McBride, '76

A Fulton native who participated in basketball, baseball and track during his two years at Westminster. Holds the school-record in the 200-meter dash. Left Westminster early to pursue a professional baseball career. Named 1974 National League Rookie of the Year playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. Retired in 1984 after a 10-year professional baseball career.

Kirk Mendenhall '90

A two-time NAIA All-District 16 shortstop, Mendenhall earned First Team NAIA All-Area and Second Team NAIA All-American honors as a senior. Mendenhall holds more than five school records and led the Blue Jays to a school-record 34 wins in 1989.

Paul Moyer '01

There are few individuals who have impacted Westminster College baseball like Paul Moyer. During his four-year career Moyer batted .311 with three home runs. But, it was on the pitching mound where he made his mark. A two-time St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and a two time all-region performer, Moyer compiled a 15-2 record with a 3.35 ERA. He appeared in 30 games, pitching 169 innings while striking out 129 batters. He led the Blue Jays to conference titles and NCAA national tournament appearances in 2000 and 2001.

Justin Peery, '00

Justin Peery (#14 Retired): Peery began setting records in his first start at quarterback as a freshman in 1996 and never looked back, throwing for an NCAA-Division III career record 13,262 yards and an all-division record 148 touchdowns. Peery was a four-time all-league performer and he earned All-American honors in 1998 and 1999.

Scott Pingel, '00

Scott Pingel, ’00 (#10 Retired): Pingel arrived at Westminster College in 1996. In four years he owned the NCAA all-division career records for receptions (436), receiving yards (6,108) and touchdown catches (75). A four-time all-conference performer, he earned All-American honors in 1997, 1998 and 1999. A CoSida Academic All-American in 1999, Pingel also was named the 1999 NCAA Division III National Football Player of the Year (Melberger Award).

Ken Rueter, '72

A letter winner in basketball and baseball during each of his three years at Westminster. An NAIA All-District 16 basketball selection and the school’s Athlete of the Year as a senior. This former Blue Jay scored 811 points in just over two years, but his basketball career was shortened by injuries his junior season. Returned to Westminster to teach business, before assuming the position of Vice-President for Business and Finance.

Frank Saucier, '48

A varsity letterman during his collegiate career. Minor league player of the year in 1950. Played for the St. Louis Browns in 1951. First president of the Westminster Alumni ’W’ Club. Westminster’s baseball field named for this former Blue Jay. A Part of Baseball History: August 19, 1951 - Eddie Gaedel, a 65-pound, 3-foot-7 midget, makes his first and only plate appearance as a pinch-hitter for Frank Saucier of the St. Louis Browns. Gaedel, wearing No. 1/8, walks on four pitches by Detroit Tigers pitcher Bob Cain and is taken out for pinch-runner Jim Delsing. The gimmick by the Browns owner Bill Veeck is later outlawed.

Amy Schaeperkoetter, '98

A Dean’s List student each of her semesters at Westminster. A four-time all-conference and four-time academic all-conference selection in basketball. Also a CoSida Academic All-District pick. Holds more than 10 school records in basketball, including career marks in scoring (1,282) and assists (316).

Jason White, '96

 

    

A four-time St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic All-Conference basketball selection. Led Westminster to the conference tournament title and an NCAA Division III national tournament berth in 1995. Conference co-player of the year and D-III News honorable mention all-America selection as a senior. Left Westminster with career records in points (1,836), rebounds (1,046), and blocks (194).

Katie Zagar, '99

First-ever Westminster student-athlete to be named a CoSida Academic All-American, earning third-team honors for soccer in 1998. A Dean’s List student in each of her eight semesters. A four-time all-conference soccer selection, earning second team recognition three times. Named all-conference in softball twice. Holds all of Westminster’s goal keeping records, including career shutouts (19) and career goals against average (2.19).
