Many people erroneously assume that the only real job prospect for English majors is teaching. Teaching is certainly an option, and many of your professors think it is an excellent one. However, it is by no means your only choice in today’s world. Nowadays the business world has begun to recognize that the skills learned by English majors are invaluable. Publishing firms are always an option, and many English majors choose to become editors and publicists. Likewise, many English majors become political consultants and lobbyists. Some have chosen to go into public relations either within corporations or at PR firms. A few have even gone into the Peace Corps. Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t change the world with an English degree!
As always, graduate school is another option. At Westminster, the option for an undergraduate thesis will help you succeed in graduate school – because you will prove that you are already capable of graduate-level work. Obviously you will be prepared to pursue a graduate’s degree in English, but other options include Law, Journalism, and even Management and Business Administration (MBA). An English degree will serve you during your entire life, making you capable of significant and meaningful self-expression. You will find that you will know your own mind more fully, therefore making you capable of knowing others all the better. As wise writers and leaders know -- the pen is mightier than the sword, but only if you know how to wield it effectively!
