Legal Professions

Why Westminster?

Westminster’s Pre-Law program is distinctive because it is built around a Pre-law minor that contains a mix of courses intended to help students acquire the skills they need to succeed on the Law School Aptitude Test (LSAT) and in Law school and as attorneys, such as Logic, Speech, Expository Writing,  a solid background in the law and legal reasoning, including Business Law, Constitutional Law and Politics, the Supreme Court, International Law and Organizations, and American Jurisprudence.

Students in the Pre-Law program are strongly encouraged to participate in a law- related internship as one of their elective courses. The Pre-Law minor can be completed with any major, and students who want to major in Political Science can choose the Pre-Law track in that major, which will allow them to complete the major and the Pre-Law minor simultaneously.

Prepare for Law School

As part of its Pre-Law program, Westminster offers an inexpensive LSAT prep course on campus every spring semester to help students prepare, during their junior year,  to take the LSAT in  the early summer, before applying to law schools in the fall semester of their senior years.

Westminster’s Legal Professions Program prepared me for the critical thinking and communication skills needed for law school at Vanderbilt and set the foundation for my legal career. The program’s in-depth study of legal philosophy, history and judicial processes more than prepared me for the next steps in my career.

Partner at Dowd Bennett LLP

The instruction that I received at Westminster College has been essential to my success at law school and in the practice of law. The courses I took encouraged me to attack legal issues from many different perspectives and disciplinary areas, and the Phi Alpha Delta chapter provided me with opportunities to discuss questions and concerns about the study and practice of law with other students and those in the legal field.

Our Pre-Law Grads

Westminster students who participate in its Pre-Law program almost always do as well in law school as they did as undergraduates and many have been hired by prestigious firms, in federal and state agencies, and public interest and nonprofit organizations.

Some have started their own law firms, some have won elected offices, and one (so far) has clerked for a Supreme Court Justice.
