Goal:

To write a short reflective piece that documents the depth and breadth of your unique experience whether that be an internship, community service, service learning, study abroad, alternate spring break or participation in a faculty-led trip.
Guidelines:

Approximately 500 -1000 words in length
Include ample first-hand observation and description
Utilize quotes and/or dialogue when appropriate
Use first-person style (“I”)
Please have a title and a sub-title
Include photographs if they are available

Getting Started

  • A good approach is to start with a specific and concrete opening, then move to a discussion of more general or abstract ideas about your experience.
  • Try to avoid clichés, or statements that anyone in your situation would/could make. Instead, convey what is individual and unique about your experiences.
  • Try to imagine a specific audience for your piece. What would that reader enjoy hearing more about? What would interest or inspire him/her?
