Coordinator of Physical Education Department
Education: Dr. Miller earned her bachelor degree at Missouri State University (formerly Southwest Missouri State University), Master’s Degree from The Ohio State University, and Ph. D. in Health and Exercise Sciences at University of Missouri.
Background/ Past Professional Experience: Dr. Miller began full time teaching at Westminster College in 2000, after teaching one year of part time at the college. Previous teaching experiences have included adjunct positions at Drury College, Missouri State University, and Ozark Technical College. Clinical experiences in cardiac rehabilitation and adult fitness include positions as exercise specialist and exercise technologist at Irene Walter Johnson Rehab Institute (Barnes Hospital/ Washington University), VITAL Cardiac Laboratories, and Mount Sinai Hospital (Milwaukee, WI).
Courses Taught: During her career she has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in health, physical education, exercise science, education methods, freshman seminar, as well as a variety of activity courses.
Scholarly/ Professional Highlights: Dr. Miller’s interest in the role of physical activity in children’s growth and development is the impetus for serving as the State Coordinator for the PCPFS (President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sport) Demonstration Center Program. Her American College of Sports Medicine Program Director, Exercise Specialist and Exercise Technologist certifications expand the scope of her expertise in health and exercise science.
Current Teaching/ Research Focus and Interests: Dr. Miller is currently teaching courses in the Physical Education Department, Education Department, and Women and Gender Studies Programs. As chair of the Focus on Teaching committee, she is interested in supporting teaching and learning advances in the Westminster College community. Developing her Women’s Health Issues class to include an International Perspectives component has provoked interest in multicultural health education.
Married/ Children: She and her husband, Larry, have three children: Becca, Scott and Kevin.
