Westminster College is seeking outstanding candidates for the position of Chaplain Resident and Instructor of Religious Studies. Westminster is a small liberal arts college in mid-Missouri of approximately 1,000 students. Our mission is to create “leaders of success, significance, and service…” through our “distinctive liberal arts curriculum and dynamic developmental experiences” (From the Westminster College Mission Statement).

The Center for Faith & Service is a new initiative on the Westminster campus, created in the summer of 2016 through the merging of the Office of Spiritual Life, the Office of Community Engagement and Service Learning and the Office of Intercultural Engagement. It serves as a radically inclusive, justice oriented hub for campus involvement and connection with the local community. Our next Chaplain Resident will assist in the discernment of our future structure, mission statement, and long term goals.

The Chaplain Residency Program seeks to support recent seminary graduates who feel a call to college chaplaincy. This position is designed as a learning opportunity for such candidates to provide hands on experience and mentorship in the context of a small liberal arts college.

Supervisor: Rev. Jamie Haskins, Chaplain, Director of the Center for Faith & Service, and Instructor of Religious Studies

Dates of appointment: August 1, 2017 to May 31, 2019 (this is a 10 month annual position; Resident will not be obligated to work in June or July of 2018/2019). In consultation, Westminster College and the Chaplain Resident may choose to extend the position an additional year, ending in May of 2020. 

Position Summary: The Chaplain Resident will serve as a member of the Center for Faith & Service staff, offering a ministry of pastoral care and spiritual support for students, faculty, and staff. In addition, they will oversee community engagement initiatives as well as other areas of focus determined in conversation with the Chaplain and Director of the Center for Faith & Service. The Chaplain Resident will also serve on the faculty as an instructor of Religious Studies, teaching at least two undergraduate Religious Studies courses during their tenure at Westminster. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to service, a passion for mentoring and journeying with 18 to 22 year old college students, and a deeply rooted commitment to faith. Because of the diversity of the Westminster campus, we seek someone with a welcoming, inclusive theological paradigm who thrives in an interfaith environment. The ideal candidate demonstrates an enthusiastic interest in exploring ministry within the context of higher education.

Position Responsibilities

The Chaplain Resident position consists of three main components:

1) Directing community engagement and service initiatives.

Supervising a team of student interns, fostering community relationships and organizational partnerships, and facilitating student reflection.         

2) Teaching Religious Studies courses as a part of the Religious Studies faculty

Courses will include REL 101 Introduction to the Bible; Other upper level courses will be determined in consultation with the Religious Studies department and in light of the Resident’s academic interests.

3) Supporting and fostering campus worship and spiritual life

Assisting with faith based programming and student organizations such as Interfaith Advisory Board, community worship, and other programs.

Other duties to be determined at a later date in consultation with the Director of the Center for Faith & Service.

Additional responsibilities might include: Student Life commitments / on-call duties; assisting the chaplain with campus-wide events such as Commencement and Baccalaureate; may be called upon to assist the chaplain to support the campus in times of crisis or celebration (such as in the case of a campus tragedy or national emergency)

Requirements: All candidates must have earned a graduate degree in theological education, including, but not limited to, an MDIV, MTS or similar degree, and be set to graduate from their current institution in either fall of 2016, spring of 2017, or have earned their degree from an accredited institution within the last 12 months. While ordination is not required, the candidate must demonstrate a commitment to a faith tradition or community of faith and be rooted within a meaningful theological paradigm. Experience in any service oriented positions or service based learning is optimal but not required. Additionally, teaching experience is optimal, but also not required. Westminster College strives to offer a competitive salary comparable to other residency programs.
