How To Update Your Virus Protection On-Campus

Back to Computer Services Home

Back to 'How to" Instruction Page

If you are using Version 7.1.0 or 8.0.0 or 8.0i:

You will only have one icon - it's a shield. Right-click the shield and choose Update Now. Choose Close to exit when update has finished.

If you are using Version 4.5 or 4.5.1:

For PC Users:

1. You should see the following two icons (among others) at the bottom right of
your screen:

       a.  A magnifying glass
       b.  A shield

2. If you right click on the shield or the magnifying glass and choose About, you will get an info window that gives you some information. You will want to see the most recent virus definition file, a Created On Date and Scan Engine information.  This data indicates the last time your dat files were updated and which versions you have. Typically the date should be within the last 7 days or so.

3. Close that window.

4. Double click the magnifying glass.

5. Choose Auto-Update and Double-Click it to start. If you get a message that says your definition files are current or have been updated, you are fine. Skip Step 6. If the process fails for any reason, go to next step.

6. Go to the website below.  Bookmark this site for future use. Scroll down until you see the file Windows - Intel. (Under Platform column). You are looking for the file entitled sdatxxx.exe (under English column - the x's stand for
numbers). Double click on the file and Choose Open to run it. This will update your definition files. It will only take a few moments.

7.  Now run virus scan on your "C" Drive.

8.  Make sure you have your virus scan scheduled to run daily. When it comes up to run, don't stop it. If you are in the middle of doing something, just reduce the window and let it run in the background. Do not ever stop it from running. This is for your protection and that of the other campus users.

9.  Make sure all your options are enabled (System, Email, Internet and Download Scans.)

10. Have questions? E-mail the Computer Services HelpDesk or call us on x5169.

For Mac Users:

1. Both Virex 6.1 for OS "classic" 8-9.x and Virex 7.2 for OSX have an "e-update" button on the top-right corner of the Virex menu bar. Otherwise they can download the appropriate DAT file from the McAfee site and run the installer for it, just as PC users can do with the "SuperDat" updaters.

2. Choose either the Dat file for Virex 6.x  OR Dat file for Virex 7.x  as needed.
These are typically released monthly for Macs.
