The Bill Emerson Fellowship

The Fellowship commemorates the contributions and personal qualities of Congressman Bill Emerson who, over the span of five decades, contributed significantly to the shaping of American public policy and the process to achieve common sense solutions to real world issues. A good example of this commitment was his interest in hunger issues both in the U.S. and throughout the world. As one Congressman commented, he "did so much good that saved so many lives."

Bill Emerson graduated from Westminster College in 1959 after spending time in Washington, DC, as a congressional page. Congressman Emerson returned to the Capitol after graduation to work as a staffer with Rep. Robert Ellsworth (KS) and Sen. Charles MacMathias (R-MD), and as a lobbyist for TRW and Fairchild Industries. He also received his law degree from the University of Baltimore in 1964 and an honorary LL.D. degree in 1994 from Westminster College.

In 1980, he defeated a Democratic incumbent in the 8th District of Missouri to become the first Republican to win the seat in 52 years and the only Republican to maintain the seat for more than three years. Integral to his success was keeping the needs of his district close to his heart and always seeking real, common sense solutions.
