What is the difference between "work experience" and an internship?

For a work experience to be considered an internship (either credit or non-credit) it must meet the following criteria:

  • The intern must be professionally supervised on site.
  • The internship must be a new learning experience for the intern.
  • The intern must have a deliberate learning agenda going into the experience.
  • The intern must actively reflect on what he/she is learning throughout the experience.
