It graduated its first class in 1967, and quickly acquired a very strong academic reputation, though it never succeeded in registering more than 400 students or so per year and struggled financially. In 1974 it merged with the state university system, becoming both a Sarasota campus for evening and extension classes of the University of South Florida (in Tampa), as well a distinct high-level academic unit within USF. A few years ago it became an autonomous honors college within the state system, now independent of USF.
