Rushing; initially classes were held on the former Naval Air Station on the western edge of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport; in 1968, Dr. A. Hugh Adams was appointed president and served until 1986; the name was changed to Broward Junior College, later to Broward Community College, and now, Broward College; South and North campuses were created, as was the Downtown Center and the Tigertail Lake Center; Dr. Will Holcombe, then became president, followed by Dr. Larry Calderon in 2004; when Dr. Calderon left the college in 2006, Dr. Holcombe returned to serve as interim president through the appointment of J. New College Sarasota Florida 1960 founded as an "experimental" college emphasizing close faculty-student relationships which translated into a very low faculty:student ratio, and high expenses. It graduated its first class in 1967, and quickly acquired a very strong academic reputation, though it never succeeded in registering more than 400 students or so per year and struggled financially. In 1974 it merged with the state university system, becoming both a Sarasota campus for evening and extension classes of the University of South Florida (in Tampa), as well a distinct high-level academic unit within USF. A few years ago it became an autonomous honors college within the state system, now independent of USF.  In addition to state funding, the institution benefits from a private foundation formed by the old private college's board of governors. http://www.ncf.edu/
